duty of care
This term is a specialized legal concept primarily used in tort law to establish negligence. It describes the threshold of responsibility a person or entity owes to others to avoid causing foreseeable harm. In a courtroom, the focus is not on whether harm occurred, but whether the defendant failed to meet the standard of a reasonable person in similar circumstances.
Because it is a technical legal term, it is rarely used in casual conversation unless referring to professional liability or official safety regulations. It is almost always paired with the verb "breach" when a failure to meet this obligation is alleged, or "owe" when describing the existence of the legal relationship.
